"Streets of fire"
A few things. First, and most compelling, check out my darling dearest's new blog. It's seriously interesting stuff and he's a hell of a writer, and I'm a very lucky girl.
I'm also obsessed. A brief Youtube search for Bruce Springsteen yielded some good results, one in which The Boss talks art and politics with Soledad O'Brien. Go there, watch that, then read these lyrics and watch this video, and tell me something in you isn't singing:
When the night's quiet and you don't care anymore,
And your eyes are tired and there's someone at your door
And you realize you wanna let go
And the weak lies and the cold walls you embrace
Eat at your insides and leave you face to face with
Streets of fire
I'm wandering, a loser down these tracks
I'm dying, but girl I can't go back
'Cause in the darkness I hear somebody call my name
And when you realize how they tricked you this time
And it's all lies but I'm strung out on the wire
In these streets of fire
I live now, only with strangers
I talk to only strangers
I walk with angels that have no place
Streets of fire.

Have a nice week !
"The comment that led to new restrictions on commenting! Or just eye-rolling and aversion!"
I somehow came upon Born in the USA last night on You Tube and then looked up the lyrics and couldn't understand how no one pointed out to Ronald Reagan it was about the horror and aftermath of some (socio-economically) poor juvie getting snatched up and tossed in and out of a rich man's racist war. I'm guessing he felt empowered by it and told himself "I'm unfuckwithable!" And then Bruce showed up and said "train your ears, if you're even using them!" and that was the end of that. But then I just read that's an urban legend, because they refuted the story's legitimacy on wikipedia of all places, and that George F. Will wrote his speeches, the guy that deconstructs language in the new york times magazine - sometimes while wearing a red bowtie! (not that bowties have anything to do with writing instruments or vocal chords) But vh1 was all over it as a true thing saying he stopped Reagan from using it in his campaign? That's how I heard it when I saw it. Still, he sent the same message to Chrysler and they re-pocketed seven million unspent dollars. Okay, i'm watching the vh1 legends documentary part II, the next comment will be made up of footnotes (I promise that that next comment won't happen, enough is enough, I say to me! This is ridiculous!). "Enrique Iglesias and Tom Jones perform the Bruce Springsteen song "Fire" at the VH1 Men Strike Back Concert in New York." What the hell is the men strike back concert? Well, it has nothing to do with unemployed factory workers and it's all about male divas.
"Betrayed! The footnotes had been made but were found washed up on a deserted shore!"
Okay, i'm an idiot, william safire (nixon speech writer not known for red bowties but for being wiretapped by the person he had been writing speeches for) does the language column and will had connections to the campaign that might have influenced the staff to think it was okay - whatever, in this town I am finished!
